Jackie Allen, one of Chicago's most successful and critically acclaimed jazz vocalists, says that Jenniphre Zias "powerfully combines jazz, cabaret and blues with her stunning voice and fabulous presence." The Illinois Entertainer refers to her as a cross between "the great Annie Ross and Rickie Lee Jones." If you've caught her shows at Green Dolphin Street, The Park West, Carmichaels or The Chicago Cultural Center, then you're already familiar with the power of her voice and the warmth of her personality.
Jenniphre began singing songs of masters like Cole Porter and Hoagy Carmichael at age fifteen, but even then was no stranger to performing. She had been performing with her folk-singer mother in churches throughout Pennsylvania, her native state, since age three. While obtaining her degree in musical theater, she perfected her impeccable performance skills and sophisticated, yet instantly accessible, style. Upon graduation, she moved to New Orleans to study jazz and blues. She performed at various clubs on Bourbon Street, where big band leader Chuck Easterling told her, "You are gonna make it!"
Since her arrival in Chicago, Jenniphre has impressed audiences and club owners alike with her campy charm and arresting voice. Her rapid musical development here reflects both inherent talent and intense training. As lead singer for the wacky latin funk band, Samba Bamba, she has appeared on THE JENNY JONES SHOW, at The Taste of Chicago (96 and 97), Halsted Street Market Days, Taste of Lincoln Avenue, and The Museum of Contemporary Art. Heading her own combo of premiere musicians, The Chicago Rhythm Review, and as guest vocalist, she has appeared with The Rockerfellers, The Alan Stephens Orchestra, Barry Winnigrad and the Alternative Seven, Phoenix, The Steve Edwards Orchestra, The Bill Peterson Orchestra and The Orchestra 33 Late Night Band. Her lovely voice was also recently featured on a commercial for "Fox on Fridays". This holiday season, she will be one of the artists featured on 93WXRTs "Local Anesthetic Holiday Spectacular".
Whether fronting a duo, combo or orchestra, Jenniphre's immense and diverse repertoire and captivating personality will keep audiences' hearts bouncing! Though currently recording her third CD, it is obvious at her shows that live performance is Jenniphre's first love. By flavoring refreshingly obscure tunes with classic favorites and delightful originals, she is a hot addition to Chicago's music scene!
